The details of the Bud-ret proposals are still under discussion in committee. In the Legislative. the imposition of a 5 per cent. loan "ad valorem duty on a number of artie'es hitherto admitted free and an increase
of the present dnty on others are meeting with vigorous opposition from Sir Henry Parkes and his followers. Sir Henry threatens that if the proposals me insisted upon he will do his utmost to force a dissolution. Sir John Robertson also expresses himself opposed to the proposals brought down by Sir Patrick Jennings. The s.s. Mararoa sailed for Snn Francisco via Auckland this afternoon. (Received May 21, 1.51 p.m.) May 21. The debate on the proposals introduced by Government for the imposition of. a five per cent, advalorem duty on certain products hitherto untaxed was concluded last night. On a division being taken the motion was carried by 47 votes to 30. Melbourne, May 21. A shocking fatal accident occurred last night as Dean Russell was leaving the Town Hall where he had been attending a church meeting. He fell down the steps, and was picked up insensible. Medical assistance was obtained, but the Detm never regained consciousness, and soon expired. (Received May 21, 1.25 a.m.) Albany, May 20. The steamship Valetta arrived at King G-eorge's Sound this morning, with London mails to April 16ih.
