Blenheim, May 20. A young man named Thomas Scott met with a fatal accident while rabbit poisoning at Mr P. Seymour's Tynsfield station yesterday. A big boulder struck him on the side of the head, and he died from his injuries directly afterwards.

Christchurch, May 19. James Davis, a labourer, who met with an accident on the ocean steamers wharf on Monday last by being run over by a railway truck, died at the Lyttelton casual ward to-day, mortification having set in. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned but the jury added a rider that it w«s advisable that some one should be appointed to watch lines while shunting was being carried on. Mr H. P. Lance, brother of Mr J. D. Lance, M.H.R. for Cheviot, and a gentleman well known in sporting circles, died this evening after an illness of about a week's duration.

j May 20. Pillbrow's well-known racehorse Mata has had to be shot, have developed striughalt. During his career he won two Dunedin Cups, the Canterbury J. 0. Handicap, the Victorian R. C. Handicap, and tbe Adelaide Queen's Birthday Cup. He was bred by Mr H. Redwood in 1874, and was by Dead Shot out of Raupo. A meeiing whs held to-night of men desirous of proceeding to the Kimberley goldfields, and about 40 agreed to club together iu order to make up a party.

William Barnes, overseer of the works, and Josiah Roberts, who had char°e of the powder, were examined at "great length, and th<- inquest was adjourned till the 27 th.
