THE PROPOSED REDUCTION OF CABLE CHARGES. (Received May 7, 3.15 p.m.) Sydney, May 7. The papers relative to the scheme of defence recommended to the colouies by Admiral Tryon have been made public. He suggests that the colonies should bear the cost of a number of vessels which should be under the control of the naval authorities. The Archer type of fast-going torpedo boats is considered the most suitable for the work required. The correspondence from the various colonies shows the New Zealand Government favours an increased expenditure of £IO,OOO per annum, for the purpose of local defence. West Australia and Tasmania doubt whether their respective legislatures woutd sanction any increased expenditure. They point out that there is no information with regard to the proceedings of the recent conference. (Received May 7, 10.31 p.m.) The no-confidence motion introduced by Sir Henry Parkes yesterday, regarding the Treasurer's Budget proposals, will be discussed on Tuesday next. The Orient Company's Chimborazo, quarantined on April 23rd, owing to an outbreak of small-pox occurring on the passage out, was released to-day. New Zealand wheat, 4s '2\ per bushel; New Zealand oats, 2s 4d; maize, 561bs, 3s 4d ; sugar unchanged. (Received May 7, 10.31 p.m) Melbourne, May 7. The Government has received a telegram from the Agent-General in London, confirming the conclusion of an Anglo - German convention on the Pacific question. (Received May 8, 12.10 p.m.) May S. Mr John Pender, Chairman of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, telegraphs that all difficulties in the way of a reduction of rates is now overcome, and he hopes the colonies will accept his recent proposals to allow non-contributing colonies a shate of the benefit. The Victorian Government has taken the question under their consideration, but their decision is not yet known.
