"Scholastic."—The population of the United Kingdom at the taking of the last Census, on Ist April 1881, was 35,241,482, as follows : England (including Wales, 1,360,513) 25,974,439 Scotland 3,735,573 Mand 5,174,836 Isle of Man 53,558 Channel Islands 87,702 Army, navy, and seamen abroad 215,374
35,241,482 The population of London at the Census of 1881 was 3,816,483. This was the Registrar-General's London. But the various areas and population on the night of the Ist April, 1881, were— City of London 50,652 Eegistrar-General's London 3,816,483 Local Management London 3,834,454 School Board London ... 3,834,454 Police London 4,716,609 " Greater London " ... 4,766,661 The second city (in population) in the United Kingdom is Glasgow, which in 1881, with suburbs, was 674,095. But the Registrar-General's Glasgow is limited, and for the year ending September 27, 1884, he gives the population of London, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow as follows : London 4,019,361 Liverpool 573,202 Manchester (including Salford 197,153) 525,649 Glasgow 517,941 By the new Act, 1884-85, to amend the Law relating to the Representation of the People of the United Kingdom, the three principal cities next to London are credited with the following population : Liverpool 601,050 Glasgow 510,812 Manchester 422 224 Glasgow is, however, at the present time, suburbs in each case included, the largest city in the United Kingdom next to London, and we believe now numbers nearly one million.
