SCHOOL COMMITTEE'S ANNUAL REPORT.

[to the editor.] Sir—ln your issue of the 6th in.st. I find that the Local School Committee have appointed n subcommittee; to draw up the animal report. Sir, there is something so peculiarly amusing to my mind in that paragraph that I cannot refrain from sending you these few j lines on the subject. i At the last annual meeting of householders, when the Comrnitee's annual report had be'>n ie.d, there was a sublime stillness ciepl. over the crowded rooms. Bnf it lasteil so very long that it was becoming absolutely painful: the people had held their breath so long waiting to hear which committee-man had the thickest hide that they were just upon the point; of gasping when Dr. Moucktnn br>ke the silence hv proposing that the report be receive:!, which was accordingly done, the Com-mittee-men all the while eyeing each other, Imt none dared to speak. In the concluding portion of the report there was a recommendation that ;\ hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the Hon. Secretary, wi-ie'i -v-s duly piopoaed by Dr. Muuckilb, aud i'ouuu u

seconder (I d"n'( where) I»nt it was carried. Now. fancy my uxtonishment, my dear Mr F.dior, at overhearing one of the signature to the report assert, and that emphatic dly, 'hat the aforesaid recommend 11ion in re the Hon. Secretary was not, in the report when lie signed it, and more, that had it been theie he never would have signed. It was a very elaborate document, covering many sheets of foolscap, and had the appearance of having been carefully studied—.so very carefully studied that I should have no hesitation in saving that it was worth five guineas to any man who wanted such an aticle. I have been told, or have read somewhere that the course of true love never runs smooth, and I have got it into my head that it wants a little oiling in our Local School Committee; and I would not be at all surprised if a pnhiic meeting be called prior to the meeting for the election of a School Committee that it would have a most desirable effect ; and I throw otit this hint for the benefit of whom it may c mcern. In conclusion, I sincerely hope tlvit the signatures of our next annual report will ca-e''nlly read it V'e'bre signing.—l am, yours, (fee, Pro Bono Publico. .April 12, 1886.
