THE "CALLED BACK" DRAMATIC COMPANY.
"THE SHAUGHRAUN." The performance of Dion Boucicank's latest Trish drama "The Shauahraim '» i-y tliß « Called B.ck" Dramatic aJd Comedy Company drew together a lar«e assemblage at the Theatre Royal o-i Saturday night; thus showing lhat the appreciation of the public of the efforts of the managers of this company to produce legitimate dramas have nob been misplaced. Nor have the stars nor any of the individual membeia of the company been by any means wanting iu their exeuions to furnish vis with really first class entertainments. No ptofessicnal company that e.ver came to Kumara can boast of such good patronage as has been well-earned by and bestowed upon the "Called Back" Company. The principal char! ncter in "The Shaughraun " is of course Coun, which was most ably sustained by Mr C. H. Taylor. He pourtrayed the rollicking Irish boy to perfection, i.n.l his earnest and unflinching determination to sacrifice his own life to save that of his master were pnurtvaya's that elicited m ist hearty and genuine applause l3 tbe
was dignified and pleasing; whilst Miss Carrington, as Moya (who is in love with Conn) was true, simple-hearteil and pathetic—both ladies coming in for good shares of applause. Mr Kennedy, as Cony Kinchella, and Mr Forbes as Harvey Duff (a police spy) were both excellent. Mr Forbes also (in the absence of poor Mr Dunbar) had to take the part of Robett Ffolliott (the outlaw iii the piece) having to make frequent changes, but '>eing, nevertheless peifect in both, and receiving frequent manifestations of approval. Miss Edwards, as Arte O'Neal, and Mr J. Nunn, the English officer, both played excellently, and received warm plaudits. The minor characters were well sustained by Miss Lilly Hill, as Conn's Mother, Mr R. W. Rogers, as Parish Priest, and Mr VY. H. Horton. as the gallant sergeant, and on the fall of the curtain after each act, great applause took place. In the wake scone the company was wondeifully effective, eliciting peels of laughter. Throughout the entire piece there was a careful attention to details that reflects every credit on the management. The scenic effects also added much to the success of the piece : and the musical selections were well appreciated by the audience.
Before the fa'l of the curtain Mr Taylor thanked the audience for theii generous support, nnd announced that the company would play in Greyuiouth on Monday and Tuesday evenings. They would proceed to Reefton and "Westport, and return to Hokitika at Easter, when, eiiher before or after. tbey would play in Knmara again, and would produce the emotional drama of "East Lynne." The announcement was received with great applause.
