The five started off in a quiet canter, with Cyclops well to the front, First Prince and Matchlock being next to the colt. Opposite the stand, Cyclops was four lengths ahead of First Prince Malua being next, three lengths away with Sheet Anchor and Matchlock fall! mg away in the rear. Cvclops drew timber off until I, P led First Prince by twenty lengths, then came 'Malna and sheet Anchor, with Matchlock still last. The colt increased his lead as he ran up to the bridge, hut no change was discernible in the places of the other four.. At the back of the course and up the sheds the horses still remained in their respective positions, hut when Malna shot, in front of the quartet in charge of Cyclops, the latter st.ll drew ahead, and he must have been fully one hundred yards in front ot Malua when he raced past the stand : bheet Anchor was third, three lengths behind Malua, next to him being First Prince and Matchlock together. On ronnding the turn the riders began to chase Cyclops in earnest. Matchlock gradually passed First Prince, and began to close up on Malna and Cyclops. When the hack of the course was reached it was seen that Cyclops wa ß being steadily canght by the others. Sheet Anchor then shot up to second place, Malua, Matchlock, and First Prince being all in a hunch behind the leaders. Malua was fifty yards away fiom Cyclops as they raced along the hack of the course, Sheet Anchor and Matchlock abreast, being close to the favourite, with First Prince, three lengths off, last. When the abattoirs were reached, a shout announced that the favourite w;as in trouble. Match, lock then ran up to second place, with Sheet Anchor waiting upon him. Cyclops, however, still made play in front, and at the bend he was leadin'* by about eight lengths from Matchlock and She-t Anchor, First Prince and Malua being the same distance away last. Malua was put under the whip at the turn, but he could make no lesponse, and then Hales challenged Cyclops, First Prince being third, some engths away. Cyclops, however, made a gallant effort, and it was not until the distance was reached, that Matchlock got his head in front of the colt. It was then clear that the race was all over, and Hales rode Matchlock in half a length ahead of Cyclops, First Prince being ten lengths away third, and Malua and Sheet Anchor last. Time smins. ’
