A number of Ministers of the Presbj’terian Church waited upon the Premier, Mr Gillies, to-day with reference to the probable annexation of New Hebrides by France, and the deportation of recidivistes to the Pacific Islands. Mr Gillies promised to urge upon the Imperial Government the desirability of Great Britain annexing New Hebrides, or to prevent France annexing the group. The Premier also informed the deputation that a telegram has been despatched to London inquiring-if there was any truth in the rumour that a thousand convicts were to be transported to New Caledonia this year.
