A rewan! of .£SO is offered for the discovery of the offender or offenders in the case of the man whose body was found in the Waikato river on the 21sb December last, with mortal wounds on his head. It was believed by the jury at the inquest that he came to death by foul play. The Minister of Defence has, after full consideration, decided to confer the New Zealand cross on Lieutenant-Col. Thomas M'Donnell, of the New Zealand Militia. Col. M‘Donnell’s gallant conduct during the Maori war on the West Coast lives in the recollection of all old settlers in the colony, and some of the earlier instances in which he distinguished himself were borne testimony to by Generals Chute and Cameron, under whom the Colonial forces, commanded by Col. M'Donnell, were serving. Auckland, March 11. The Hon. J. A. Tole, Minister of Justice, is confined to his room to-day, and unable to go south as anticipated. He will probably leave by the next steamer. March 12. John Anderson, of Manukau, died from injuries received while bush felling. A scaffolding fell at Freemans Bay Hotel, precipitating three men—Watkins, Gear, and Still, who are all injured, Watkins seriously. Band master Morris’s wife died suddenly to-day, after a 6t of vomiting. The coroner ordered a post mortem examination. Christchurch, March 12. James Hampton committed suicide at Prebbleton yesterday, by hanging himself in a chaff house. He was a farmer, and was involved in money difficulties.
