It is expected that owing to the massing of Greek troops near the Turkish frontier the Porte will forward an ultimatum to the King of Greece demanding that the Greek forces be disarmed. London, March 8, This morning’s Daily News announces that instructions have been forwarded to Sir Henry Drummond-Wolff, special British Commissioner to Egypt, to propose to the Khedive the desirability of fixing the Egyptian frontier at WadyHalfa, on the Nile, and also to suggest that Egyptian troops replace the British forces in Egypt at an early date. The Times this morning referring to the forthcoming Budget, states that the Army estimates only provides for the maintenance of eight thousand British troops in Egypt. [SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE AGE,] London, February 17. The appeal for aid on behalf of the unemployed in Great Britain has up to the present time been well responded to. The amount of the fund is now £40,000. It is hoped that the colonies will contribute towards the relief of the existing distress. The offer of knighthood has been made through Mr R. M, Smith to Mr James Service, on his retirement from political life. Mr Service has, however, declined to accept the honour. The offer of knighthood has been made to Mr R. Murray-Smith, the retiring Agent-General for Victoria, and Mr Smith has accepted the proffered honour. February 18. Mr John B, Gough, the well-known temperance orator, is dead. February 21. Mr Menniker Heaton is moving in the House of Commons with the view of arriving at an arrangement under which the colonial forces shou’d be subject to English control, and be conceded an Imperial status.
