The “Called Back” Dramatic Company of which we gave some notice on Friday last, are announced to appear in Kumara on Friday and Saturday next. The first performance will consist of a dramatisation of the late Hugh Conway’s weird and sensational romance “Called Back” in a prologue, three acts and denouement, entitled “ A Mystic Link” ; to be followed by the beautiful moral drama “Jo,” adapted from Dickens’s “Bleak House.” “Called Back” is a very powerful drama, with proper alternation of light and shade, and plenty of opportunities for the actors to shew their powers ; while the important points of the story are so well brought out as to leave the spectator in no doubt as to the course of events, even though he never read the novel. So well, indeed, (writes a contemporary) has the work been done that it seems difficult to believe that “ Called Back ” was not first designed for the stage. No doubt this effect is aided by the circumstance that the interest of the story lies almost wholly in the plot, and scarcely at all in scenery or sentiment, or analysis of character. The company played in Greymouth last night, and the Argus to-day says of them—“ It is not too much to say that they are the best organised company that has ever appeared on the Coast.”
A meeting of contributors to the Kumara Hospital is appointed to be held at the Town Hall on Monday, the 22nd inst., to elect Trustees for the ensuing year, and to transact any other business put before it. It is also notified that any person desirous of having a vote at this meeting, and who is not already a contributor, will be entitled to do so by subscribing a sum of not less than 5s before Tuesday, the 16th inst.
Commander Edwin wired at 12.46 p.m. “Bad weather is expected between north and east aud south after 12 hours from now, and rain ; glass fall again within that time.”
As the “Called Back” Company were being driven from Reefton into Greymouth by special coach on Sunday afternoon the axle of the near hind wheel snapped, and the coach, to which there were five horses attached, and going along at a steady pace, toppled over. The Argus reports Some of those on the box were thrown off by the sudden shock, while all inside—and all the company were on board—were thrown in a heap. It was fortunate it was the hind axle that snapped, or the result might have been more painful to relate than it is, as the weight of luggage behind would have forced everything forward. Beyond being pretty well shaken all round, only two of the company have received injuries, and only one is hurt seriously. Signor Benvenuto, the pianist, was thrown clear of the coach, and fell on the disengaged wheel, striking the broken axle with his cheekbone, on which he received an ugly cut that was stitched by Dr. Morice. Mr Nunn was the next most serious ' sufferer iu the way of contusions, but there is nothing of an incapacitating nature. The ladies, it was pleasant to see, were more frighted than hurt. Matters were much improved by the horses at once coming to dead stop when the wheel flew off.” A meeting of the Education Commissioners of the District of Grey was held last evening, at which the voting papers of the various school committees were opened, the result being that the following three persons were declared elected ; Votes. Mr James Kerr ... ... 13 ~ Richard Helms 10 ~ Joseph Petrie. 10 Messrs Adam Blair (0 votes), Parfitt (5), and Morris (1) were also nominated.
