BOROUGH COUNCIL.
♦— . The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening; present—His Worship the Mayor (EL Burger, Esq.), Councillors Anderson, Killeen, Olden, Fitzsimons, Maloney, Mulvihill, and Ziegler. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. The inward correspondence was read and received, and considered. Letters, addressed to his Worship the Mayor, were read from Councillors Davies and Kroener, tendering their resignations.—lt was resolved that the tesignauons of Crs. Davies and Kroener he accepted with regret.
A letter was read from the Secretary of the Fire Brigade applying for the usual half-yearly subsidy.—Application assented to.
Letter from Messrs W. S. Hanna •and party requesting the Council to pat a few loads of gravel on a formation of road made by their party at the rear of the Church of England Parsonage, joining the piece of new street lately made by the Council as a continuation of Third street north.—On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Anderson, the letter was referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. A letter was read from Mr Ziegler, of the Empire Hotel, drawing the attention of the Council to the state of Seddon street west, in front of his stables, and requesting to have the same widened, as in wet weather the appioach was one mass of mud. He himself had expended a considerable sum in graveling the entrance to his stables.—The letter was received and considered, and referred to the Public Works Commit*- e with power to act. The Town Clerk read a report from the Reserves Committee, which recommended that the Town Clerk be instructed to again write to the County Council, stating that unless some arrangement can be made to vest the Cemetery iu the two bodies, the
Borough Council will be compelled to increase the fees for interments, which will fall mostly upon residents within the county; and asking the consent of the County Council to allow application to be made to the Lands Board to include the county in the title to the Reserve. And, in the event of the County Council declining to render any assistance to re-fence the Cemetery, the Committee recommend that a crossfence, five chains long, be put across the Cemetery by the day-Jabon v man, material to cost £6, enclosing the ground already cleared ; and that the Council take into consideration the advisability of making the Cemetery self-supporting by increasing the fees now charged.—The report was received and adopted.
The Town Cleik presented the Finance Committee's Report, which recommended the payment of £l7l 10s Bd. The principal items were—Fire Brigade half-yearly subsidy, £25; Charitable Aid Board monthly subsidy, £24 10s; J. Gilbert, for work and labour done on Borough Reserve, £2B; bonus to Town Clerk for extra services (expenses incurred in entertaining Governor) ■£42.—The total amount, as revised and recommended by the Committee was passed for payment.
The Inspector of Works (Mr F. Keenan) reported, on the 2nd inst., as follows relative to the progress of work on the Borough Reserve : “ Section No. I.—There are now seven men employed on this section, and the work appears to bo going on in a satisfactory manner, I think with fair weather they ought to finish in a month from this date.
“ Section No. 2.—Four men are now employed, and the work is progressing, and well done. This section should also be finished in a month from date.
“Section No. 3.—This section is just commenced grubbing, and only about 20 feet grubbed. Six men are at work. “ Section No. 4—About 16 chains grubbed and partly finished. The men are now at work on No. 3 section, and have left about lour chains to do yet behind them. The report was received.
The Mayor moved—“ That the contractors for sections 3 and 4 be requested to put on additional hands to complete the work in a month from tiiis date; and that the Public Works Committee be instructed that if no more men are employed by the contractors (to get the work finished) within a week, that the Committee enforce the same by putting on the requisite labour at the contractors’ expense.” The motion was seconded by Cr. Mulvihill, and carried.
On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Ziegler, the sum of £l7 10s progress payment on section 2, to J. Gilbert and party, was passed for payment, subject to being certified to by the Chairman of the Public Works Committee.
A report from the Inspector of Nuisances was read and received.
The Mayor, by notice, moved that the resolution of the Council appointing James as Fire Inspector be rescinded, and that Lieut. George Anderson he appointed Fire Inspector in his stead.—The motion was seconded by Cr. Fitzsimons and carried. THE SILVER CRADLE. The Town Cleik said he had been delegated to perform a pleasing duty, and that, addressing the Mayor, was “ to present to your Worship on behalf ■T the Council and several leading citizens a memento in commemoration of an interesting event winch occurred daring your year of office. The presentation had been unavoidably delayed, as Mr O’Hagan, the ex-Mayor, who had taken a prominent part in the matter, had been absent from Kuraara, and he hoped the Mayor would excuse the delay, which did not proceed from the want of any cordiality on the part of Councillors, who one and all desired to congratulate your Worship upon the success which had attended your Mayoral year.” The Mayor replied that he was completely taken by surprise when he first heard of this. He thanked the Councillor and burgesses most heartily for (he present, which could scarcely have been expected in a small community like Kumara. His wife and family would treasure it in respect fa) remembrance of the honorable position thev hid placed him in as Mayor of the Borough.
This concluded the meeting of the Council.
