PROVINCIAL NEWS
[united press ASSOCIATION.] Nelson, February 26. The inquest on the Nile street brid°e disaster was concluded this evening. A immber of experts were called including Mr Climie, C.E., and Mr Lightfoot, the city surveyor and designer of the brick bridge, who <r»ve evidence to-day. After a retirement of an hour and a half the jury returned a verdict—" That the death of William ITollyman was caused by injuries received by the f.,11 of a portion of the new bridge in course of construction, which, in our opinion, is attributable to the faulty design for construction by the city surveyor and his foreman, combined with bad workmanship. To which we add the following rider:— We consider the Council are to blame in causing a work of this unusual character to be undertaken without first submitting the plana and specifications to a competent engineer, and for not appointing a skilled inspector over the work. We are also of opinion that the conduct of the witnessea, J. H. Harris and Lawrence Akersten, is highly reprehensible, for not warning the workmen under the arch of the danger they were in. Hop picking is now in full swincr throughout the district. The average m cultivation is very much less than last year, and the yield per rt C re will be less on the whole; but the crops appear to be of splendid quality.
