KUMARA SCHOOL DISTRICT.

A meeting of the Local School Committee was held in the Town Hall on Friday evening; present—Mi- Seddon (Chairman), Messrs Burger, F. Bavrowman, Williamson, Jamieson, Voysey and Campbell (Hon. Sec). The minutes of the previous meeting were not read, the minute-book no"t having been returned from the Inspector.

The outward correspondence was ix-ad and approved of, aud the inward correspondence read and received.

Letters were read from H. B. Foster and J. R. Forster, applying for certificates for good attendance at school • tiie former stated that he had attended' during the year ISSS, without missing a day ; and J. R. Forster had only been absent one week, through illness.- It was lesolvwl that Mr Woodward be requested to report on the matter at next meeting of Committee.

A letter was read from the Secretary to the Education Board, announcing that J. H. Carrie, J. R. Hudson" M'Lean Watt Jack, J. M'Whirter, C. Rose, and R. J. Seddon, Esqs., 'had been nominated by the various School Committees for seats on the Board • and it was required by the Act that each School Committee should send to (he Secretary of the Board, on or before the last day of February, a list of not more than three of the names given >,bwe.—The Local Committee recorded their votes for Messrs R. J. Seddon J. M'Whirter, and C. Rose. the 9th March is the day appointed for the election of the new Wesiland Board of Education.

The Visiting Committee for the month, Messrs Smldon and Voysey, reported that on the 20th February they visited the State School, and found the work going on very satisfactorily, and the attendance good. The flooring in the scullery, and the downpipe from the lavatory in the teacher's residence required renewing The door handles and pipes at the School building required looking to, several handles being off the doors, and no keys to lock the doors with, so as to.close the several class rooms. The approach to the urinal also requited attention.—The report was received, and the Chairman and Secretary authorised to have the repairs alluded to in the report executed. The Secretary reported having written to the caretaker in reference to the locking of the school gates and doors. He also reported that it was almost impossible, to prevent the breaking of fences and destruction of school property unless he (the divetakiv ) were living on the school ground. H« (the Secretary) thought it would be a step in the right direction if a house for the caretaker to live in weie built on the ground. The caretaker could then be made responsible, ami it would in time save money.—lt was resolved that the Central Board be requested to put a sum on the estimates for the current year for the purpose of building a house for the caretaker on the Kumara School ground. This concluded the meeting.
