FIRE ON BOARD THE MANAPOURL MATE DEAD AND ANOTHER DYING. Gisborxe, February 26. The Mar.ap mri arrived from* Auckland at halt-past one, and signals were made for a doctor. On the launch going off it was found that a terrible accident had occurred. The vessel left Auckland at 1.15 yesterday; at three the hatches were taken off to gel a parcel iu the hold for a lady passenger. On removal, smoke issued in ]ar<*e volumes, and from the smell it w% known to he smoke of some acid. Mot iis, chief officer, and other men went below to get the package before the tire communicated with the other cargo. Unfortunately it took some tune to get at the packages, the men being compelled to breathe the poisonous air for a long period. Some time alter the package was got out the men became insensible, foaming at the mouth. A doctor, who was a passenger on board, did all he could till the arrival of the vessel. Before Dr. Pollen, of Gisborne, could get aboard, ihe chief officer died.' The third mate’ Mr Cck, was brought ashore and tiiken to a hotel, and is not expected to recover; five men, who were taken to the local hospital, are doing well the other men on hoard received less i-juries. The accident caused little or no commotion on hoard, the vessel continuing on her way without interruption. Mr Booth, Magistrate, went out f o hold an inquest, but decided to hold it when the vessel reached Napier. It was most fortunate the fire was discovered in day lime, as if it remained till darkness ihe consequences would have been disastrous. The vessel leaves for Napier at nine. It is not considered that anyone but the third mate is in danger. The weather down was extremely fine, and little damage was done to the cargo, though some water was poured down. The cause of the disaster was a small package of nitric or sulphuric -acid, shipped at Sydney for Christchurch, and the distinctive mark of the nature of the contents was insufficiently prominent, the mark being simply the word “acid.” Sncli cargo is usually carried on deck <)■ just under the combings of fch e hatchway. The third officer, Mr Cook, is so,king fast, and the doctors say he can't lasi out the night; the rest are dmng well. The second and fourth officers are uninjured.
