IN COURT FOR FIRST TIME.

A woman who, according to her own statement, has never before been in a Court, amused both Bench and audience at the Dunedin City Police Court lately. The Herald states:—She was charged with abusive language towards a neighbour, and when it came to her turn to give evidence, commenced by saving, « Well, yer Worships, I dtinno one of the whole crowd of yez; which one will I speak to? I'm a perfect fool here. This woman threw a billy of beer at me when I was sitting at my own doorstep, and she's been often here, you know." One of the justices: "But you are charged with calling her most abominable names." Accused : " But she came into my house and struck me, and when she saw she'd 'put her foot in it,' she got out a summons for me." To corroborate her statement accused said a lady was in Court. The. latter, on hearing her name, jumped up and ejaculated, « Och, am Ito be shworn ?" This witness assured the Bench that accused was sitting at her doorstep singing an Irish song when complainant threw a billy of beer at her—"just the same as if I was to fling this Bible at yer Worships." As she seemed to be about to suit the action to the word the Justices looked solemn, but she allayed their fears by saying that she did not intend to harm them. After all this the case was found proved, and accused fined 5s with costs; in default, seven days' imprisonment.
