(Received February 22, 7.30 p.m.) London, February 21. A mass meeting of unemployed was held in Hyde Park to-day, under the auspices of the Socialist organisation. There was an enormous attendance, fully forty thousand persons being present. Speeches were, made con-d.-nn.ing the proposal to establish relief works for the unemployed. Burns, a
leading Socialist, against whom proceed ings have been taken in connection with the late disturbance, in the course of hJS add jess, pj-edlcted that bloodshed would ensue unless the social reforms asked for were granted. There was a large force of police, on the ground and in the neighbourhood, but their services were not called into requisition. The assemblage dispersed in an orderly manner.
His Royal Highness the Prince of of Wales has left town for Cannes, in the south of France.
The Ruapehu arrived to-day from Wellington, with her meat cargo in good condition, (Received February 22, 10.30 p.m.) February 22. The Greek Government is reported to be showing some inclination to yield to the demands of the Powers that she should demobilise her forces. (Received February 23, 2 p.m.) Evening. The committee which was appointed under the chairmanship of Mr Childers to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the recent riots in West End, has sent in a report urging that a full itiquiry be made into the management of the Metropolitan Police Force, In consequence of this report, Sir Edmund Henderson, K.C.8., Commissioner of Police, has tendered his resignation of that office. (Received February 22, 10.30 p.m.) Rangoon, February 22. His Excellency Lord Dnffei’in has arrived here from Mandalay. (Received February 23, 2 p m.) Berlin, February 22. It is announced that Germany has declared a protectorate over the Marshall Brown and Providence groups of islands in the North Pacific. The German Government has officially informed the British Foreign Office of its assumption of the protectorate.
