THE FEDERAL COUNCIL.

(Received January 28, 10.50 p.m.) Hobart Town, January 28. The Federal Council resumed its sittings in the Executive Council Chamber to-day. Mr Berry moved a resolution in favour of obtaining official information as to the state of affairs in connection with the islands of Raiatea and Samoa, which was agreed to. The subject of Anglo-French and Anglo-German relations then came before die Council. A long discussion ensued, the general expression being that the Federal Council should be kept well informed of all negotiations proceeding between England and France, and England and Germany. Regarding details, many differences of opinion were manifested by members, though all admitted the general principles. The debate was adjourned till to-morrow, after which the. Council adjourned for the day. (Received January 29, 10.30 p.m.) Jauuaiy 29.

An address was voted to his Excellency Sir George Strahan praying him to telegraph to her Majesty the Queen the resolution passed at yesterday's sitting asking for further information respecting the islands of Raiatea and Samoa.
The following bills were then read a second time :—Authorising Service of Civil Process beyond a Colony • Providing for Issuing and Facilitating Proof of Council's Acts in Colonial Parliaments.

Australian colonies in concerting measures for the adequate defence of Kinrr George's Sound, and the erection of a lighthouse, for signalling purposes, on Cape Leu win, the lighthouse on Cape Leuwin to be placed in telegraphic communication with King Gem-go's Sound.
Mr Douglas in a vigorous speech emphasised the remarks he made on Wednesday evening at the banquet relative to the fin me of ihe colonies Mr Douglas stated his piedictions applied to the distant future, and concluded by declaring his reverence for the person of the Qneen. The Council then adjourned until Monday.
