[united puess association.] Palmerston North, January 28. Whiggins, with several aliases, was sentenced to three years with hard labor, for stabbing aud wounding, at Otaki, on 2olh December. There were thirteen previous convictions a»ainst him. CASWELL SOUND QUARRY ABANDONED. Wellington, January 26. The directors and experts who went to Caswell Sound on behalf of the Marble Company have returned and brought back with them all ihe workmen, machinery, tools, &c, from the quarry. It is understood that instead of £IOOO, which it was thought would
give the quarry a fair trial, it would require at least £6OOO to properly open up a face, and the Secretary is of opinion that to carry on the company successfully a capital of ,£20,000, in addition to the present plant would be necessary.
