CRICKET CHALLENGE CUP.

MATCH BETWEEN HOKITIKA. AND GREYMOCJTH. The second contest at cricket for the challenge silver cup presented for competition by Messrs Griffen and Smith, wine and produce merchants, Grey, mouth, took place on the Racecourse Reserve, Greyniouth, on Saturday last, the 23rd inst., when the Hokitika players scored another victory. The teams were captained by Mr Lynch, for Hokitika, and Mr Clements, for Grey mouth. The Grey captain won tlie toss, and elected to send the southerners to the wickets. The Argus compliments the Hokitika players "on the great improvement in their play, especially in the batting and fielding departments. In the fielding ll"»y far surpassed the Grey team, and their smart return of the ball to the

wicket-keeper led to the downfall of several batsmen. The ground was lumpy, and caused the players to get many hard knocks which they would not have received had the wicket been good." Boddington, it will be seen, played two capital innings for Hokitika, making 23 (not out) and 22, Clarke also batted well in the second innings. We observe Hokitika has also the large number of 22 byes to their credit.

For Greymouth, A. Malcolm made the highest score iu the match (24), aud 7; whilst Perkins, jun., made double figures in both innings, and Murphy in his first. The following are the full scores in the match:— Hokitika—First Innings. Andrews, bowled A. Malcolm ... 1 Colttnan, bowled A. It is an elegant piece of workmanship, specially designed as a cricket trophy. Mr B. Housely acted as umpire for Hokitika, and Dr. MacCarthy for Greymouth. The scorers were—Mr M. L. Moss for Hokitika, Mr J. M'Davitt for Greymouth. The Hokitika cricketers returned homewards yesterday by special coach, arriving at Kumara at about 12.30, and proceeding onwards shortly after three o'clock, gratified with their second victory.
