THE DIPHTHERIA SCARE.

(TO the editor.] Sir—lii answer to a letter in the Kumara Times of January 22nd in which the writer si.»ns himself " Vigilance," I wi*h to say that either he got deliberate lying information, or he has made it himself; for all the clothes that were used at the post mortem were burnt immediately by Mrs Skipper, and on Friday morning the 21sr, I started to burn the things that the child made use of for some "tiirne. So, knowihg what falsehoods and scandal were already going about, I asked Mr Skipper to come and see rae clear out the child's bedroom and burn everything. He came and stopped until the last article was on the tire, which wns the mattress the child laid on. And to my surprise, just as I hnd finished, the Sergeant of police came saying theie had been some complaiuts. I showed him what clothes were out, and they are still there; but I suppose my lam ley will have to be taken down, as I shv.ll have to go to work to-mor-row ; and there is a blanket that was taken off our own bed about a month or six weeks ago. Ido not know if "Vigilance" or his scandaling informant wishes me to set fire to my house arid all that we have, because our little girl died of a complaint that the jury returned a verdict of « natural causes and not otherwise "—not a word about diphtheria. And now, Sir, re-isolating, I got a tin of cloride of lime from Mr Barnett, Seddon street, and used it for that purpose. But I deny that h in the truth that the County and Borouah Councils paid £2O for isolating the premises of Seterina; for the money went to pay for other things. Now Sir, as I adopted the precautions before mentioned, I have done my brst, if there is anything of diphtheritis in' it. Hoping you will kindly insert this in your valuable paper, and oblige—l temain, yours &c.

A. Sellars. Kumara, January 21, 1886.
