Ross, January 16. A serious accident occurred at the Mount Greenland Gold Mining Company s mine to a man named Rasmus Jacobsen. This morning while at work a large slip came down suddenly and crushed him, tearing off one of his feet, Jacobsen was removed lo the hospital, where he died.
Timabu, January 15. Mrs Wadsworth, wife of a farmer at Oran, expired suddenly this morning. An inquest will be held.
Wellington, January 16. H. Gordon, Inspector of Mines, lias been elected a Fellow of the Geological Society.
January 17. The members of Government will meet Admiral Tryon and his Excellency the Governor at Christchuich, next week, for the purpose of discussing the question of the defences of the colony. The Governor has. cabled to the Home authorities that the Samoan representatives are in New Zealand, on matters connected with Samoa, and he has also cabled the effect of their representation, No reply has yet been received. The chiefs are being diiven round the city, under the guidance of officers of the Native department. On Monday they proceed to Wairarapa. Christchurch, January 16. Howard, Mrs Howard, and the Godfreys have been further remanded until the 25th inst.
Charles Lockwood, for twelve months employed in prospecting in the vicinity of Browning’s Pass, committed suicide chere to-day. He had been low spirited for some days.
Dunedin, January 15. The Presbyterian Synod, by 64 to 10 resolved to recommend Dr. Salmond for appointment to the chair of Mental and Moral Philosophy in the University.

Proceedings have been instituted by Robert .Fawcett, station overseer in the riding ol Waikato, for a divorce from his wife .Elizabeth Fawcett, nee E. Mercer, on the ground of alleged adultery with W. E. Dowling, liverystable keeper, Waipawa, Hawke’s Bay. This morning Justice Gillies fixed the hearing of the action to take place without a jury during the April civil session. The adultery is alleged to have been committed towards the end of last year. The respondent and co-respondent are further alleged to be now living ag man and wife at Waipawa. Neither entered an appearance in the matter, although duly cited.
