PROSPECTING FOR GOLD IN WESTLAND COUNTY.
At a meeting of the Prospecting Committee of the Westland County Council held on Wednesday evening, the Times reports that the following business was transacted :
Gouldie and party, right hand branch Kanieri, wrote to ask for payment of a sum of £4l 6s, balance due on work done in driving a tunnel on their prospecting area. It appeared that this party had been paid a sum of £55 for work already performed, but the tunnel had been extended a distance of 836 feet instead of the 600 feet for which payment was made. Afiersome discussion, it was agreed to recommend that the sum of £4l 6s be -passed for payment to the party. Reports were read of nature and extent of work done by Mycklander and party (prospecting ahead of the Kutnara goldfield). New applications were received and dealt with, as follows :
Henry Everton and party applied for 15s i»er man per week to prospect for gold in the vicinity of Mount Camel hack, on the south side of the Hokitika river, about six miles from any known woi kings; application gianted, subject to the approval of the County Engineer as to site and locality of operations.
Callaway Cameron and party applied for aid, under Class 11. of the Comic i’s iemulations, to prosper f .r gold about three miles up the M ,h riapoa Greek, und about half a mile east of same.
The sinking was estimated ta be about 60, feet through ground requiring to be slabbed. Application granted, subject to same condition as the former one.
Duske, Breeze and party applied for aid, under Class 11. to prospect in the vicinity of Frosty Creek, contiguous to the Ross-Hokitika road.—Application granted. Denker, Knox and parly applied for 15s per man per week to prospect from the head of the Hokitika river into_ the ranges, three miles from any main or other road, or known workings. This application was referred to the Engineer, with power to grant same, on being satisfied that it was advisable to do so.
This concluded the business, and the committee adjourned sine die.
