We have to acknowledge the receipt yesterday of several pul dications :—l. From Mr 11. J. H. Elliott, Undcr-Wecre-taiy Crown Lands Office, Wellington, a copy of a most useful work to intending settlers in New Zealand. It is called “ Land Act, 1885 is published by the authority of the Hon. John Ballance, Minister of Lands ; and it consolidates 26 Acts and ordinances relating to Crown lands, and brings all that is deemed essential in them within its compass. It has also extended very materially the facilities for obtaining agricultural and pastoral lands on settlement-conditions, both in respect of increased areas and easier terms of payment. The price is not stated, but probably to any bona-fide intending settler in New Zealand a copy might be had from the Crown Lands

Office, Wellington, by forwarding stamps to the amount of Gd or Bd, to cover postage. 2. From Mr W. 0. MacDermott, a copy of the “Postal and Telegraph Guide,” price 6d. The principal alterations to note since the October issue of the Guide are the Revised Time Tables for the Direct, San Francisco, Orient, Ceylon-Brindisi, Torres Straits via Brindisi, and French Packet Mail services ; the regulations in connection with the new system of postal notes; and the amended regulations respecting the transmission and delivery of delayed telegrams. No tradesman should be without a copy of this useful quarterly guide. 3, From Mr J. A. Bonar, a copy of the “American Trans-Continental Tourist Guide,” with rates, time-tables, places of interest; and Maps and time-tables of the Union Pacific Railway, the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railway, the Chicago and NorthWestern Railway, showing the shortest, quickest, and safest great American overland routes.

There was a large muster of admirers of the poet Burns at last night’s meeting of the committee for celebrating the anniversary of Scotia’s immortal bard ; and the majority of those present were not satisfied with the arrangement advertised on Wednesday to simply hold a banquet on the occasion, as this would imply that there was a falling off in the number of admirers here or a diminution in the ardour of those who wished to celebrate the anniversary. Either of these implications is far from being the case, and the result of the meeting was that it was resolved to hold a banquet and ball, and several more names were added to the committee of management for carrying out the festivities therewith. The banquet will be held at the Masonic Hall, and the ball afterwards, at the Theatre Royal.

A Volunteer district order is published to-day, notifying when parades for the Adjutant’s inspection of the various companies on the West Coast will take place, the inspection of the Kumara Rifles, it will be seen, is appointed to take place on Wednesday next, the 20th inst., at 7.30 p.m., being half-an-hour earlier than usual.

Captain Fairchild says that he never saw White Island in such an active state of eruption as it is in now.

The cause of Mrs Sala’s death was an internal tumour, and she died under an operation in Melbourne. Mr and Mrs Sala had been married 25 years. Roughly calculated, the losses of the settlers by bush fires in the neighborhood of Mount Egmout are estimated at £IO,OOO. The unexpected death of Sir Peter Scratchley in the prime of life (observes the Australasian Insurance and Banking Record), affords another example of the prudence of life assuaance. Sir Peter, from time to time, since 1878, effected ten policies on his life in the Australian Mutual Provident Society for various amounts. Some were for short terms only, and have expired, but at the date of his death six were still in force for £7500. He was considered by the office to be a first-class life in every respect, and was allowed to proceed to New Guinea on paying the usual extra premium for the special risk.

Cured of Drinking. uf mine was cured of an insatiable thirst for liquor, that bad so prostrated his system ttyit be was unable to do any business. He was entirely cured by the use of American Co. ’a Hop Bitters. It allayed all that burning thirst, took away the appetite for liquor, made his nerves steady, and he has remained a sober and steady man for more than two years, and has no desire to return to his cups.”— From a leading R. R. Official. A Lady’s Wish.— “Oh, how I do wish my skin was as clear and soft as yours !” said a lady to a friend. You can easily make it so,” answered the friend. “How ?” inquired the first lady. “By using Dr. Boidc’s Hop Bitters, that makes pure rich blood and blooming health. It did it for mo, as you observe.” Read.
