The prisoner Howard, charged with attempting to defraud the Government Life Insurance Association, was sent to Christchnrch to-day by tho Rotorua in charge of Constable O'Rourke. Howard was in the habit of wearing a glove with gutta percha in the inside of the thumb to couceal the fact that part of his thumb was missing. A young man named Fred Symons, manager of Gilmer's Family Hotel, which is situated opposite the scene of ihe late fire, was arrested this afternoon, charged with having certain tobacconists' wares in his possession, which it is alleged he had stolen dining the time the fire was raging. A prisoner named Daniel Irvine, charged with assaulting a warder, has been sentenced to thirty days in irons. The well-known racehorse Consul had his hind leg broken yesterday. It is said that a boy driving him out of the paddock threw a stone at him. The horse has been slung and the leg set. Christchurch, January 7. Henry Legge, a clerk in the Deeds Office, died suddenly. An inquest will be held. The two Godfreys and Mrs Howard were brought up at the Resident Magistrates Court to-day and remanded to Monday, January 24. Howard arrived this morning, but was not brought up. Nelson, January 7. Large bash fires are raging in the district, aud the atmosphere is full of smoke. In the Clarke and Motupiko Valleys a fire is raging for thirty miles, and the West Coast coach had to put back to-day unable to get through. Blenheim, January 6. James Bnliff, pilot at Wairau for over 17 years, died to-day. I Dunedin, January 7. I The Minister of Mines has received I a telegram from Warden Kenrick, of | Alexandra, stating that after an interJ view with the Native Committee and natives all objections to prospecting in the King country are removed, and six parties of prospectors, each consisting of two Maoris and two Europeans, start nn Thursday week to prospect in six different localities. Ninety-five men left by the Waihora to take the place of the wharf laborers on strike in Melbourne. Auckland, January 7. The carpet snake seen at Ellerslie | grandstand was captured and handed over to Professor Thomas, who chloroformed it. It will be preserved as a specimen in the Museum, Auckland University. The Waikato mystevy is not yet cleared up. The police can find no trace of Jimey Dunbar, and it is almost certain that he is the murdered man.
