NEWS. *- — ..... [REUTERS TELEGRAMS.] By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. A SUCCESSFUL NEW GUINEA EXPEDITION. VICTORIAN WHARF LABOURERS' STRIKE. (Received January 4, 0.45 a.m.) Sydney, January 4. Captain Srrachan, leader of the "Age" New Guinea expedition, who left Sydney in August last on a commercial expedition to the Myacusha river district, New Guinea, reports that the expedition has proved a complete success, and that he has been able to establish friendly relations with no less than fourteen native tribes. Arrived, this morning the Te Anau, from Auckland. Melbourne, January 4. In consequence of the. wharf labourers' strike the steamers Nemesis and Tarunung have been laid np for the present. The shipowners have resolved to notify to shippers that cirgo must be delivered
in ship's slings. It is intended to introduce labourers from New Zealand and South Australia, offering them lengthened contracts, and paying their passages to Victoria. (Received January 5, 1.10 p.m.) January 5. The effects of the wharf labourers', strike are extending to other directions, but the masters remain firmly united. A large numbers of steamers engaged in the intercolonial trade have been laid up. The Australian Steam Navigation Company have doubled their freights to Sydney and Queensland.
