THE ATHLETIC SPORTS AT HOKITIKA.

Our county townsmen catered largely for public amusement aud pleasure in athletic sports during Christmas and the. coramercemeut of the New Year. Without troubling our readers with the causes which led to the formation of a second Caledonian Society in Hokitika, we propose to give just, the results of some of the events which transpired at the meetiugs of the Hokitika Caledonian Sports Association and the Westlancl Caledonian Society. HOKITIKA CALEDONIAN SPORTS ASSOCIATION. The sports in connection with this association's meeting were held on the Chinch of England Reserve, Upper Gibson's Quay, Hokitika, on Thursday, 31st ult. There was a fair attendance. The Handicap Hurdle Race (300 I yards), over five hurdles,- about 3ft. high, the first prize being a Cup (presented by Mr Coltman, Reve'l street), and £2 10s, second prize £l, third prize 10s, was won by S. Sherman (5 yards) ... 1 A. Gr. Ash ton (scratch) ... 2 There were seven entries. Sherman won with two or three yards to spare. M'Davitt was well iu the race, but lost ground in jumping. The Hop, Step, and Jump was a capital contest; first prize £1 10s, second £l. P. Chambers (36ft. 11 Jin.) ... 1 Boddington (36ft, Uin.) ... 2 M'Creedie also entered Whilst the match was being contested heavy rain set in, which made jumping very difficult. As it gave no sign of clearing, the sports had to be postponed. There was a large crowd on the ground the second day, Friday, January Ist. Dancing on the rotunda to the strains of the Volunteer Band was almost continuous. The Kumara B'ondin performed during the day, and generally his performances were pronounced an unequivocal success. For the Wrestling, Cumberland style, there were three prizes first £6, second £3, third £l. Olin threw Carton, Watson threw Corby, and O'Connor threw Martin. Watson then threw Olin and took first prize, Olin second, and O'Connor third. For the Hokitika Handicap Race, four results, 100, 220, 440, and 600 yards, first prize £B, and cup presented by Mr Glossop, second £5, third £2, there were only four starters out of seven who entered. The first event, 100yds, was won by S. Sherman, Heenan second, Ashton third. The * second event, 440yds, was also won in the same order, Sherman, Heenan, and Ashton. E. R. Boddington, J. M'Gregor, H. G. Surgenor, and G. Millar also entered. For the One Mile Handicap, first prize, Cup (presented by Mr J. Lange, Revell street), and £7, second prize £3, third prize £2. F. WESTLAND CALEDONIAN SOCIETY'S SPORTS. These sports were hold on the race,oourso on New Year's Day, ten to twelve hundred persons being on ths ground. The Maiden Race was very well well contested, M'Davitt just managing to beat Byrne at the post. Throwing the 161 b. hammer was easily appropriated by M'Greqov. First prize £3, second £2, third £l. M'G.egor (69ft. 7iin.) ... 1 Chambers (58ft. 2m.) ... 2 Daly (57ft. 2m.) 3 Westland Handicap—First distance, 220 yards. First prize £5, second £3, third £2. M. O'Loughlin (2 yards) ... 1 E. For the second distance, 440 yauis—first prize £5, second £3, third prize £2 (and also the same amounts for the first, second, and third best aggregate-* in two distances), the result was as follows: O'Loughlin (5 yards)... ... 1 Boddington (scratchy... ... 2 M'Davitt (9 yards) 3 The prizes for the best aggregates were as follow :—O'Loughlin, 1 ; Boddington, 2; M'Davitt, 3. Walking Handicap - Three miles. First prize £4, second £2, third £l. Keller 1 A.Rhodes 2 P.Daly ... 3 This was a hollow affair, as after a couple of miles had been done, Keller walked clean away from the others and won how he liked; Rhodes second ; but the pluck of little Daly, a lad of 14 years of age, was much admired, and he well deserved the third prize. Handicap One Mile.—First prize £B, second £4, third £2. E. Boddington, scratch ... 1 F. Michel, 60yds 2 J. Lahore, 40yds 3 This was without doubt the best contested race of the day. Boddington made a waiting race, and kept himself well in hand nntil the last round, when he made a spurt for first place, and, passing all other competitors, came in an easy winner. Tug of War—Ten to compete, first prize, £5, was won by Irving'a team. The second day's sports in connection with this Society's gathering were held on Saturday. The spectators mustered in force, and the grand stand was well filled, mostly with ladies. M'Davitt pulled off the fiist prize in the Hokitika Handicap. Boddington, O'Loughlin, and Little being equal, divided the second and third prizes between them. The Wrestling Match (Cumberland style), first prize LlO, was won by Corby.
