SUICIDE OF A MINER. [from our own correspondent.] Lyell, January 4, 9.25 a.m, A miner named Dorainico Berato committed suicide last evening at Zala Town. He laid on a sofa with a cartridge of dynamite on bis chest. The head was completely severed from the body. He was and had been for several days perfectly sober. A little boy, son of Gower, butcher, was rushed by a cow this morning. The horn entered the child's eye and pierced the brain, making a fearful wound. Death is expected momentarily. January 2. Gower’s child, who was injured by a cow, died on Thursday afternoon. Christchurch, January 1. Mr James Kirby, formerly editor of the South Canterbury Times, has been appointed subeditor of the Lyttelton Times vice Mr W. H. Atack, who takes the managament of the Press Association at Wellington. Yesterday morning a boat containing two lads named Gee and Taylor were capsized in the River Waimakiriri at Kaiapoi. Taylor was drowned, but Gee scrambled out. He went home and to bed. About an hour afterwards his father elicited from him that Taylor had fallen into the river. Search was made and the body recovered.
