A ring on the Land found yesterday sit Sumner has been identified as having belonged to Arthur Howard, supposed to have been drowned there on October 11th, and whose life was insured for £2OO. Wellington, December 17. The various Mayors in the colony are gazetted Justices of the Peace under the Municipal Corporations Act. Supreme Court writs were to-day issued agrinst Mr H. N. Aichott, Auckland, Mr Lachlan M'Gowan, Mr Lusconibe Searelle, and Mr Chas. Harding, at the suit of Mr John Faust one Adams, of London, proprietor of the copyright of " Maritana," claiming £2OO damages for the licensed representations of that opera by the company now performing in Wellington. An injunction restraining the future performance of the opera is also asked for. Messrs Buckley, Stafford and Barton act for the plaintiff (whose registered New Zealand representative is Mr E. T. Gillon), and Mr Travers has accepted service on behalf of defendants. Proceedings are also likely to bo taken to restrain the performance of the " Bohemian Girl." Auckland, December 17. The unemployed workmen in Auckland and its neighborhood are complaining bitterly of the dilaturiness of the authorities in not finding sufficient employment for them, and they talk of adopting a more effective method of influencing Government. Professor Black lectured to-night at the Choral Hal' regarding the establishment of a School of Mines, and his impression respecting the Thames goldfish!. G.
