[united press association.] Christchurch, December 16. *An extraordinary discovery was made at Taylors’s Mistake near Sumner to-day. A Mr Godfrey was walking on. the beach, when he picked up a dead man’s hand with some inches of the arm attached. It is a left hand and was not at all decomposed, and appeared to have been snapped or broken from the body, the relic has been taken possession of by the police, who are making inquiries, but are. not in possession of any further information at present. Reece, 450 yards, in 16mins. 51secs. The popular sports at Hagley Park were very successful; 6000 people were present. C. Hnlaton, scratch, won the 100 yards in lOsecs. Lebeau won the two miles walking match. Wellington, December 16. The rumoured creation of new members to the Legislative Council is denied by the Government. Bishop Redwood and Faaher Sanzeau returned from Sydney this morning. The Minister of Public Works is now in communication with the Colonia l Treasurer, respecting a scheme for obviating the delay and inconvenience which contractors are now subject to before receiving payment for work done for Government. Instead of all vouchers having to be forwarded to Wellington to go through the Audit Office mid Treasury before payment, it is intended to authorise district engineers to audit the accounts on the spot, and when satisfied of their correctness to pay the amount direct. The system is expected to come into force about February Ist. Auckland, December 16. A case of forcible ejection at Rotorua ended in John Wilson, Arthur Storey, and B. Douglas being committed for trial. The Queen’s Hotel was burned ; nothing saved.
