MR. VOGAN, OP THE NEW GUINEA EXPEDITION.
[Auckland Herald, November 27.] All human sympathy is blessed, and although we are more often called to wepp with those who weep than to rejoice with those who have occasion to rejoice, it is well for us to do even the latter occasionally. When the first
news arrived of the massacre of the New Guinea expedition, Mr Voga", brother of Mr Arthur "Vogan, artist, to the expedition, was in Auckland. He immediately left for Taurnnga, where his parents it-side, in order that he might break the news gently to them. We need not say how great a sot row it was. They continued hoping against hope till details were given, intl news came that the intelligence wis credited in Australia, and that a man-of-war had sailed to avenge the massacre. Then it seemed that there was no room left for hope any more, and that they mast mourn their son as having met a cruel death. Several days thus passed over. While they were all sunk in grief a telegraph boy appeared, and on opening the envelope they saw the I words "Expedition all right." Mr R. A. Carr, of Fort street, had written to Messrs R. Harper and Co., of Sydney, asking them, if any news cauqe. of the expedition, to send him word. Mr Can's was the first wire that reached Auckland, and he immediately repeated it to Taurariga. After that telegrams rained upon the happy family. Several came from Auckland, from friends who saw Reuter's telegram announced, and others came from different parts of tlm colonies from persons who were eager to convey the joyful news. One artived from Sir Edward Strickland, the President of the Australasian Geographical Society. Lastly, one was received from Mr Arthur Vogan himself, which stated that the expedition reached the mountains oa the northern coast of New Guinea.
