[united PRESS ASSOCIATION.! I Dunedin, December 4. A woman named Mary Goddard attempted to commit suicide yesterday by walking into the bay and lying down in three feet of water. She was rescued by a young lad, and brought up to-day and remanded. Gold to the value of £20,000 was brought down,by escort last night. Christchurch, December 3. A seaman named M'Alister, on board the R.M.S. Rimutaka, was drowned in Lyttelton Harbour this afternoon. It appears that a stage had been rigged on the starboard side of the vessel to enable men to bolt up the coal port-holes. M'Aiister accompanied the ship’s carpenter, Gibson, to the staging, and shortly after the carpenter left him, M : Alister seems to have missed his foothold and fell into the harbour. He sank immediately, and although two men jumped overboard to try and save him, they were unable to get a "hold on him and he was drowned. The body has not been recovered. Timaru, December 4. Charles Stoodley and W. Kennedy, circus proprietor and employee, were charged at the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning on remand from Dunedin, with assaulting M. J. Godby, on November 21st, at Timaru. The complainant attended the dress circle, with his wife and another lady, and the defendant charged complainant with having crawled under the canvas and not paid his way. In spite of plaintiff's protestations he was forcibly ejected. Plaintiff had expressed his willingness to accept an apology, but none being forthcoming Stoodley was fined £5. Kennedy was discharged.
