THE ARMED CRUISERS.

A notification has been given to tho respective owners of the vessels fitted as armed cruisers during the recent Russian scare, that her Majesty's Government will not require them on the termination of their present charters. This will release a number of fast passenger steamers, including the Oregon and the Umbria, sister ship to the Etruria, both belonging to the Cuuard Company ; the Massilia, belonging to the P. and O. Company, and stationed at Sydney; the Lusitania, an Orient Company's steamer, stationed at the same port, and the Coptic, chartered by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, stationed at Auckland. The Massilia, 4908 tons, was secured for £7OOO a month for six months from

April 13, on condition that the owners found the crew, and £SOOO a month if the Imperial Government paid the crew. The Orient steamer Lusitania, 3532 tons, was chartered on April 17, also for a minimum term of six months, Ht. £1 2a 6d per ton per month, or at £3OOO a month, .according as the owners or the Government provided the crew. The Shaw, SaWll and Company's steamer Coptic, 4448 tons, was chartered for six months on April 18, at £1 2s 6d per ton, or 15s per ton per month, according as the owners or the Imperial authorities paid the crew.
