The Kumara Times. Published Evening. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1885.
In an interview with Mr Malfroy, Mayor of Ross, by a reporter of the Dunedin Evening Herald, some plain and "unvarnished" facts anent the goldmining industry of the colony, the abolition of the gold duty, and the East and West Coast Railway are published, which we reprint to-day and commend to the attention of the Mines Department and the legislators of the colony. A census of persons, and of live stock, and of land in cultivation within New Zealand, and other- particulars relating thereto, will be taken on Monday, the 29th March, 1886. The census enumerators and superintending collectors are gazetted. The war between the Servians and Bulgarians at Slivnitza is of a desperate nature. According to a cable message this afternoon 25,000 Servians and 15,000 Bulgarians were engaged in conflict at or near Slivnitza, in the vicinity of the Balkans. After thirteen hours fighting, it would appear from latest advices, I the Servians retired, to await reinforcements. The British Parliament was formally dissolved on Wednesday last. The German Reichstag was opened yesterday. An inquest was held at Goldsborough yesterday, before J. Giles, Esq., Coroner, touching the death of the infant son of John Martini. Dr. Davy, who conducted the post mortem examination, stated that the child died from inflammation of the lungs, and it had not received proper nourishing food. The evidence also disclosed the fact that no medical advice had been procured. The jury returned a verdict that death resulted from natural causes. Mrs Ryan, who we reported yesterday had attempted suicide on Tuesday evening, was brought down to Greymouth from Nelson Creek on Wednesday evening, and given in charge to her husband until such time as she would be required to undergo a medical examination in order tp decide as to her sanity or insanity. The Argus states that she was examined yesterday by two medical men, and all that is wanted now is an order for her committal, which will probably be obtained to-day, Major Keddell being away yesterday. The members of the Kumara Dramatic Club are requested to meet in the Adelphi Theatre to-morrow evening, at 8 o'clock. Divine service will be conducted in Holy Trinity Church, on Sunday next, by the Rev.' Mr Gould, of Hckitika. In the morning there will be a communion service ; in the afternoon the Sacrament of Baptism will be administered, jyad an.
address to children given ; and in the evening Mr Gould will preach at seven o'clock. That most important invention the Electric Lamp is destined to bring about a complete revolution in all branches of lighting. Particulars may be seen in our advertising columns. Half Asleep ! —" I never," wrote a young lady to a friend, "go to church or lecture but I am half asleep, and I never know afterwards what the sermon or lecture was about." It was a plain case of nervous lethargy, produced by want of action of the liver and digestive organs. She was persuaded to try American Co.'s Hop Bitters, and now she writes : " How intelligent and bright are sermons and lectures now, and how glorious the world we live in is ! Dr. Soule's Hop Bitters are indeed a blessing to me." Notice The Brazen Serpent. Like the brazen serpent that the great Jewish leader lifted high in the sight of the perishing followers, whereby they were saved from death, the discoverers of American Hop Bitters have placed before suffering, ailing mankind, a remedy which enables them to fight disease with conquering advantage.
