BANQUET TO THE GRECIAN MINISTER IN LONDON. (Received October 12, 1.30 a.m.) New York, October 10. The death is announced, at the age. of 75, of Cardinal MacCloskey, Archbishop of New York. The operations which have been carried on some time past by the Marine Department with the view of clearing the East River channels were successfully finished to-day, when no less than nine acres of reef in what is known as "Hell Gate" were successfully removed by means of dynamite. (Received October 11, 12.30 p.m.) London, October 10. M. Triconpi, speaking at a banquet given in his honour to-night, stated that Greece could not neglect her vital interests in Macedonia. He added that his Government counted upon receiving the support of Europe in the present difficulty. October 9. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,200,000 quarters. Aksakoff avers that Austria and Russia have arrauged to replace Prince Alexander in the spring by a Russian vassil, and absorbing Roumelia, Austria at the same time annexing Bosnia and Herzegovina. Prince Alexander will endeavour to forestall this plot. Russia insists on his deposition, or compensation in the form of command of the Bos|ihorus. Germany is favourable to his deposition, while Euglaud opposes it. The relations between Austria and Russia are strained. October 6. M. Herve Magnon and M. Pierre LeGrand have resigned their portfolios in the Brisson Ministry, consequent on their defaat in the recent elections. The Royalists proclaim an early downfall of the French Republic. The cable which is to be laid between the Cape de Verde Island and St. Paul de Loanda, on the West Coast of Africa, has heen shipped. Much surprise has been occasioned in the city at the news of the recall of Sir Saul Samuel, Agent-General for New Souih Wales, and his being replaced by Sir Alexander Stuart in that position. Sir Saul Samuel has received no official information of any change. The surprise is all the more marked since the advice of Sir Saul Samuel in regard to the floating of the loan in conjunction with the Bank of England had been accepted by the New South Wales Government. The news has created much regret in official and financial circles. In the French elections, the successes
in the provinces as against the towns have been the means of defeating the present Government. The extreme Socialists are condemning the French Colonial adventures. October 8. The correct average of the New South Wales Loan is £9l 13* sd. The Standard commenting on the loan, states that stockjobbers tendered for the bulk of it, in order to prevent a fiasco. M.M. Brisson, Targe, Floquet, and Cleraenceau are amongst those elected to the Senate for Paris.
lb is reported that the Porte has decided to recognise Prince Alexander as ruler over Rxmmelia. A hitch has arisen in connection with the Conference proposed to be held at Stanibonl to consider the Roumelian difficulty, the Emperors of Russia, Austria and Germany desiring that the affairs should be restored to the statu quo ante, whilat England, France and Italy are willing to accept it. The Marquis of Salisbury, in his speech at Newport, stated that he was opposed to free education and the granting of peasants' allotments.
