Tenders for the New South Wales loan of five and half millions, at three-and-a-half per cent., were opened today, when the amount tendered for all round reached nearly fourteen millions. (Received October 9, la.m.) October 8. The total amount of the tenders for the New South Wales loan is £12,300,000. The Marquis of Salisbury addressed a public meeting at Newport last night. In the course of his speech he referred at length to European affairs, stating that it was impossible for England to interfere in the revolution in Ronmelia; although the policy of her Majesty’s Government was to uphold Turkish rule, wherever found to be compatible with the welfare of the people under her sway. Adverting to domestic affairs, Lord Salisbury advocated extensive reforms in the Local Government system, and expressed himself desirous of initiating an easy method for the transfer of land. He stated that the Conservative party were quite prepared to reject any proposals for the settlement of Irish affairs that would menace the integrity of the empire. Speaking on the question of Imperial Federation, Lord Salisbury said that a closer bond of union between the mother country and her colonies would be the , best means of asserting the strength of Great Britain in the councils of the world.
