lii the engagement between the Abyssinians who went to the relief of Kassala, and the Hadendowa tribes the former had a complete victory over the rebel Arabs ; and it would appear by a cablegram reI ceived and published this afternoon that the notorious Osman Digna, who so long defied the British at Suakin, is among the I three thousand Arabs slain in the battle. The Abyssinians also lost a large number of men. A late cablegram states that the tenders for the New South Wales loan of £5,500,000, opened yesterday, amounted to nearly £14,000,000. The Hon. W. Robinson's two New Zealand horses, Winchester and Liverpool, were backed last night for considerable amounts, at 200 to 1 for doubles in the Derby and Cup. The terms of the new San Francisco mail contract are now concluded and particulars appear in this day's issue. The new service, notwithstanding that it is to be broken by the steamers calling at Honolulu, is to be executed monthly in one day less than the former contract time ; and it is thought that after adding the cost of the coastal service and all other expenses the returns to New Zealand will be considerably in excess of all the payments. Commander Edwin wired at 11.16 a.m. to-day :—" Bad weather may be expected between north and west and south-west ; glass further fall, and rain. Indications bad." The Kumara Rifle Volunteers will parade for inspection at the Adelphi Hall, to-morrow (Friday) evening, at eight o'clock. Major Webb, the District Adjutant, will attend, and every Volunteer is required to be present. The Greymouth Naval Artillery and Rifles paraded on Tuesday ; and the First Westland Rifles will parade this evening. The match between O'Loughlin and Craig, of Auckland, the Argus reports, is not to come off. O'Loughlin will probably run Woods ; but in the meantime he has turned to again in the Brunner mine, where he will work for a month or two before racing, if he does race, Woods. Should Hunt put Woods away, as is fully expected, owing to the champion being a bit stale here, it is quite on the cards that Woods will forfeit with O'Loughlin. At a meeting of the Waste Lands Board at Hokitika yesterday afternoon, present the Chief Commissioner, Messrs Robinson, Bevan, Northcroft, and Paterson, amongst other business was the consideration of au application from E. Loughnan to have a i-eserve made on the north side Teremakau River, adjoining deferred payment block I. Turiwhata Survey District, to pi'otect same by preservation of timber from the encroachments of the Teremakau River. —The Board decided it could not grant the application in its present form, but proposed that the area be thrown open for selection (a road reserve along the river being made) to enable applicant to secure the land himself, if he desired. ]
