KUMARA HOSPITAL.
The ordinary meeting of the Hospital Committee was held in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening; present Mr Rudkiu (in the chair), Messrs Voysey, Watson, Burger, Wildridge, Wooidridge, Hannah, Ziegler, and Hope. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The inward correspondence was received and considered. A letter from Under Secretary Cooper in reference to Andrew Carlstrom, late a patient in the Hospital, and who has been sent to Rotorua in the hope of restoration to health, was ordered to be forwarded to the Benevolent Society. Mr Burger banded in a copy of the report of the Commissioners appointed to inquire into the circumstances which attended the appointment of Dr. Monckton as Surgeon-Superintendent of the Kumara Hospital, the termination of his engagement, and the appointment of Lis successor. The report was read, and returned to Mr Burger, as Chairman of the Hospital Defence Committee. Mr W. Wiesner was appointed Auditor in place of Mr Wade, who had declined to act. In reference to a promissory note received from Mr "Williams, chemist, Hokitikrt, for acceptance. ; he Secretary was instructed to inform Mr Williams that the Committee hoped to he aide to forward him a cheque in payment of his account in a fmv d-iy Mr John Hannah presented a dona"
tion of £2 2s 6d from a party who had collected money for a charitable purpose, but who did not wish to divulge the names of the donors. The donation from unknown friends was received with thanks. The Treasurer reported having telegraphed to the Colonial Secretary several times re subsidy due to the Hospital, and having received only one unsatisfactory telegram in reply which was on the Ist inst., when the Colonial Secretary asked to he furnished with the financial position of the Hospital for the quarter ending on that day, to which he had replied as follows : "To G. S. Cooper, Esq., UnderSecretary. " Financial position of Hospital 30th September: Bank overdraft, £165 September accounts for drugs and maintenance, £lO5. Total liabilities, £270 Send June subsidy if possible, or Hospital will have to be closed. Statement by post.—L. ZIEGLER. The Treasurer also stated that he had telegraphed to Mr Seddon (the member for the district) aud received a reply. . ~ Mr Burger moved that on account ot the Government not having sent any satisfactory reply, the Secretary be requested to send in the morning a telegram as follows :—" Several telegrams and letters have been sent to you, to which no reply has been received, re June subsidy to Hospital. Am requested bv Committee to finally ascertain from'the Government whether the subsidy will be sent or not. Present liability, £260. Committee will not incur any further expenses unless satisfactory reply received. Please reply by wire at once." He thought the Government had treated the Committee very unfairly. He would also add that in the event of no reply, or an unsatisfactory one, being received, that a special meeting be called to take into consideration the state of affairs. Accounts to the amount of £92 8s 6d were passed for payment. An account for advertising the funeral of James Montgomery, was referred to the Wardsman. Receipts were handed in from members of Committee as follow :
