PRESENTATION TO MR. GEO. ORAMS.
The members of the Kumara Volunteer Fire Brigade met on Monday evening, at the Empire Hotel, for the purpose of presenting a testimonial to their old comrade Mr George Orams, who is leaving the district with the intention of settling in Auckland. The testimonial, which was accompanied by a purse of sovereigns, was presented by his Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.), as Captain of the Fire Brigade. He said he had been taken by surprise by the sudden notice of the departure of their old comrade ; and, while he deeply and sincerely regretted parting with so old a friend, he at the same time trusted that the change might be beneficial to Mr o ranis, and that in a more settled district he would find an openiug for his family, which he understood was one of the chief reasons for his departure. Mr Orams might justly be consideied the father of this and other Fire Brigades in the district, and they would all acknowledge that the Brigade had sustained a severe loss by the resiguation of such an experienced and useful member. The Captain concluded by asking the Secretary to read the add ress. The Secretary then read the following address : To Mr George Orams, Member of the Kumara Volunteer Fire Brigade. Sir—We, the undersigned members of the Kumara Volunteer Fire Brigade, in view of your departure from Kumara, desire to express our very great appreciation of your services in all matters in connection with this Brigade, and trust that in the new sphere to which you are going you will meet with every success. In taking our leave of you we beg you to accept the small accompanying present as a memento of the good wishes of your old companions in the Brigade. H. Burger, Captain. J. Brayshaw, Lieutenant. M. Gerkaghty, Secretary. Kumara, October 5, 1885. The Captain then handed the address and a purse of sovereigns to Mr Orams. Mr Orams feelingly acknowledged the kindness which had prompted the Brigade to treat him in this manner. He gave them some sound advice on the future conduct of the Brigade, and said that wherever he might be he should always take the liveliest interest in their proceedings, and would never forget the kindness he had always received at their hands. After a few parting toasts and good wishes the meeting departed.
