ENGAGEMENT WITH HADENDOWAS. (Received October 7, 9.30 a.m.) Paris, October 5. The result of the French general elections has been a large gain to the Conservative party. In the provinces a number of electors availed themselves of the privilege of the franchise, the number being unusually great. The returns for Paris, however, are still incomplete. October 6. Riots took place last Dight outside the publishing office of " Le Gaulois," which was illuminated in honour of the result of the elections. The police, however, soon dispersed the crowd. (Received October 7, 12.30 p.m.) Later. The latest returns of the French elections give the uumber of Conservative deputies at 165, and the Republicans at 140. The number of ballotages for the Electoral College of the Senate was very large, being fully 200.

The total quantity sold during the series lias been 300,000 bales, and 7300 bales are held over for the next sales, which commence on the 17th November. Mails by the Peninsular and Oriental Compauy's Royal Mail steamship Pekin, from Melbourne, dated August 2oth, were delivered to-day, via Brindisi. Capetown, October 5. Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's steamship lonic left yesterday for New Zealand. Madeira, October 4. The New Zealand Shipping Company's R.M.S. Ruapehu, from Wellington, August 30, arrived yesterday afternoon, with her frozen meat cargo iu good condition. Suakin, October 5. Advices are to hand from Ras Aloula, who is directing the operations of Aby.ssinian bands against the rebel Arabs between Massowah and Kassala, and he reports that he has fought an engagement with a large force of Hadendowas, and that he was successful in defeating the enemy, who suffered considerable loss in killed and wounded. [special to press association.] London, September 29. The New South Wales loan will be placed on the market on the 7th. Its success is virtually assured, and it will probably average £92 srf. The bust of Sir W. 11. Hughes, of South Australia, presented to the Adelaide University, has been shipped by the P. and O. steamer Kaiser I. Hind.
