ENCOUNTER WITH A SPERM WHALE.
The Sydney correspondent of the Melbpume Argus narrates a curious experience which befel a man named John Dodds, employed at the Nationalpark Camp. He left Double Bay on Saturday night in a small skiff, intending to sail round to Port Hacking. As there was little or no wind, he took to the oars, and progressed safely as far as Botany Heads. While rowing very qaietly along, he was struck by a large sperm while, which lose right underneath the boat without having given any warning of its near approach. Dodds was thrown about 6ft. into the air, and the boat was capsized. He managed to cling to the keel for about two houis, but finding that he was drifting out to sea he struck out for land, which was about a quarter of a mile distant. Pie got on shore with difficulty, but had to take to the water again, as he could not ascend the cliffs. He was eventually taken off by a fishing boat belonging to the aborigines at La Perouse, who picked up the boat and gear, and took the shipwrecked mariner round to Port Hacking, sending two of their crew in the skiff.
