It has been reported that the two girls who escaped from Burnham a few days back, are wandering about the Port hills, and that when seen they appeared to be in a very poor condition. Several policemen have been out all day to try to find the runaways, or any trace of them, but have returned after fruitless search. Later.’ The two girls who escaped from Burnham were recaptured by the Lyttelton police on the Port hills to-night. A meeting of the Blue Ribbon Temperance Union to-night decided to guarantee £IOO towards the expenses of Mr L. W, Glover conducting a temperance crusade in the colony. Sir Wm. Fox has offered to contribute £SO towards Mr Glover’s passage, and to further subscribe towards the guarantee fund. Wellington, September 11. The first section of the WellingtonManawatu railway, from Wellington to Peramata, a distance of 16 miles, will be opened on the 21st inst. Napier, September 11. The residence of Mr A. 0. Lang, of the firm of Murray, Roberts, and Co., Hastings, was totally destroyed by tire at 5 a.m. to-day, the occupants barely escaping in their night clothes. The house was insured in the Colonial for £3OO and the furniture for £IOO in the North British. A house owned and occupied by John Sweeney, at Pakihi, was burnt on Wednesday night. The house and furniture were insured in the South British for £2OO, The origin of the fire is unknown. Timauu, September 11. At the Harbor Board meeting to-day, the not revenue for the past month was shown at over £IOOO. The question of raising a loan was postponed till next meeting. Dredging operations to increase the depth of water in the inner haibor will be shortly commenced, the trade of the port having so greatly increased of late as to necessitate a greater depth of water and berthing for ocean-going steamers.
