The Kumara Time. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1885.
Our Wellington correspondent’s telegram to-day is unavoidably held over. The business of Parliament is expected to wind up next Wednesday. The poll for the election of three borough councillors is proceeding. Very little interest is being manifested. The number of burgesses who had recorded their votes at 4.30 p. m. was 59, and the number of votes 75. A late cablegram from Melbourne states that the ship North American, which left London for Melbourne in February last, has been posted at Lloyds as missing. Commander Edwin wired at 3.8 this afternoon —“Indications of sharp frost.’’ Pettengell, who is training Hunt for his match with O’Loughlin, and will shortly bring his man over with him, is anxious to make a match with anybody on the coast for a glove contest. His brother, also an athlete, is likely to come over with him. In that case they intend to give exhibitions of boxing, single stick, Indian club, swimming, &c. Robin Hood’s Consultation on the County Purse and Hawkesbury Handicap closed with 10,000 subscribers, being the exact amount advertised. Mr Peters, the local agent, has handed us the following successful numbers sold by him in this district: —Hawkesbury Handicap ticket, lago; 3054, Moonshee; 5099, Miles na Coppaleen; 3073, fourth class cash bond. The holders are requested to present to Mr Peters their tickets, for collection. Boaz’s tenth drawing for £4OOO, consisting of 320 prizes, took place in the presence of a number of subscribers ; and the first prize (£300) went to a storekeeper in Colombo street, Christchurch ; the second (£200) to a fruiterer in Wellington ; the third (£100) to a private resident in King street, Dunedin; the fourth (£SO) to Nelson. A Scolding Woman. —The barbarities fo the ducking-stool for the cure of scolding women, though abolished by law, are now oftentimes practiced by a kind of social barbarity none the less aeprehenslble. Women scold only when they are ill. Instead of blaming them we should prescribe American Co.’s Hop Bitters. The entire system will undergo a genial, pleasant change. The nerves will be quieted and ascerbity of word and thought will give place to amiability and affection. Healthy women do not scold or fret. Read Lady Beautifiers. —Ladies, you cannot make fair hair, rosy cheeks, and sparkling eyes with all the cosmetics of France, or beautifiers of the world, while in poor health, and nothing will give you such rich blood, good health, strength, and beauty as Hop Bitters, American Co. ’s make. A trial is certain proof. See.
