CASE OF CHOLERA AT CARDIFF SOUTH WALES. 5 (Received September 5, 7.30 p.m.) Loxuox, September 4. Shaw, Saville, and Albion Company’s ship Lyttelton arrived this morning from Wellington, June 27th. The Client Steam Navigation Company’s steamship Iberia anived at Plymouth to-day.
(Received September 7, 0.10 a.m.) Cancel the arrival of the ship Lyttelton, from Wellington. The frozen meat ex ship Northumberland, from Napier, has been examined and found to be in good condition. September 6. Intelligence is to hand staling that on the 21st August several Spanish vessels arrived at Nap, one of the Caroline Group of islands, and made preparations to occupy the place. A German gunboat, however, made her appearance on the 24th August, and at once proceeded to land a body of troops, by whom the German flag was hoisted and the island proclaimed German territory, the Spaniards formally protesting against the same. On the receipt of the intelligence at Madrid, the greatest excitement ensued. The mob proceeded to the German Embassy, where they forcibly pulled down the German flag, and removed the arms of that country. A meeting was subsequently held, under the Presidency of Senor Sagasta, when it was resolved that if the Liberal party were recalled to power, they would pledge themselves to break off relations with Germany, and to reconquer the island of Nap. (Received September 7, noon.) September 5. At to-day’s wool sales, 11,000 bales were catalogued. The tone of the market is still dull. Advices from Spain state that the choleia is decreasing in that country, and the number of deaths is rapidly diminishing, A case of cholera has been reported to the medical authorities at Cardiff, South Wales, the patient being a sailor on board a ship which recently arrived from Barcelona. Teneriffe, September 3, The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamship Rimutaka left Teneriffe this morning for Plymouth. + [special to press association. I London, September 2. The freedom of the City of Dublin has been conferred upon Dr. K,. J. O’Doherty, a member of the Queensland Legislative Council, in recognition of the support given by him to the Irish cause in the colonies. In connection with the Caroline Islands difficu'ty, it is rumoured that the German squadron, at present stationed at Zanzibar, has been ordered to proceed to those islands. Acute excitement is being manifested in Spain over the affair.
