Two deaths have to be recorded as having taken place to-day, Joseph Johnson, a native of England, died early this morning at the Hospital, where he had only recently been admitted, suffering from inflammation of the stomach. Elizabeth Christie had been out of her house this morning to fetch some meat for her husband’s dinner, but at about 12 o’clock, when a girl named Agnes Edwards went to borrow something, she found Mrs Christie dead in her bed. An inquest will probably be held. Mr W. J. M‘llroy having withdrawn his candidature in favour of Mr Mulvihill, there are now only four candidates for the three seats in the Borough Council rendered vacant by the retirement by rotation of three members. The election takes place at the Town Hall on Thursday next. In the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before H. Burger, Esq., J.P., Daniel Pine appeared to answer a charge of wilfully obstructing Emil Peters, who was acting in aid of Constable Meehan in arresting John Harris, who had assaulted and was at the time resisting Meehan in the due execution of his duty. The offence having been proved, accused was fined £l, and Court costs 9s, with the alternative of 24 hours’ imprisonment. The fine was paid. Commander Edwin wired at 3.33 p.m. “ Bad weather is expected between northeast and north and west within 12 hours. Glass further fall; indications bad and for rain.” Hunt has telegraphed a second instalment of £25 of the stakes in the forthcoming match between him and T. O’Loughlin. On April Ist, 1884, the Volunteer organisation of New Zealand amounted to £4,312 of all ranks, exclusive of cadets, who were 1313 in number. Messrs Rignold and Allison have begun in Melbourne an action against Remdnyi, the violinist, for £2OOO damages, alleged breach of agreement. Remenyi will soon leave for India, and an application has been granted to permit the examination of the defendant on commission. Up to October, 1883, the loss of fortune in France due to the ravages of the Phylloxera, amounted to £200,000,000. Nearly 3,500,000 acres of the total 6,000,000 odd acres of land planted to vines in France have been wholly or partially destroyed.
