BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
An adjourned meeting of the Benevolent Society wrs held in the Town Hall on the 13th inst. ; present—Mr Dungan (in the chair), Messrs Burrell, Henne, Burger (Mayor), Sergt. Russell, and Messrs Rudkin, Nicholson, and W. Barnett (Hon. Sec.) The Treasurer (Mr W. Barnett) reported having received from Messrs Gortleman and. Cancell collections to the amount of £ls 12s. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Mr Burrell, a vote of thanks was recorded on the minutes to Messrs Gortleman and Cancell for their kind services in collecting. The Mayor reported that Andrew Carlstrom, who for some time had been and was now an inmate of the Hospital, suffering from paralysis, had been recommended by Drs. Grabham, IVlonckton, and Davy to go to the sulphur springs, near Auckland ; but that, owing to poverty, Carlstrom was not able to go thither nor test the curative properties of those waters. He (tbe Mayor) now recommended Carlstrom's oa.se to the charitable consideration of the Benevolent Society. Mr Burrell moved—" That the sum of .£2O be voted to pay Mr Carlstrom's passage, &c, to the Hot Springs; and that a committee, consisting of Messrs Russell, Rudkin, and the Hon, Secretary be appointed to cany out the necessary details." The motion was seconded by Mr Rudkin, and carried. An application from Mrs PfViff for wool was not entertained. Sergeant Russell reported that Mrs
Kelly's case was one deserving of relief, in consequence of ill health. On the motion of Mr Nicholson, seconded by Mr Burrell, it was resolved that Mrs Kelly receive provisions to the amount of ten shillings per week, until next meeting.
A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting.
