The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, 1885.

To-day being the day of the celebration of the Assumption, services were held at St. Patrick's Church at 7 and 9 a.m. The Christchurch coach arrived at the usual hour this afternoon, with mails from the East Coast and Australia.

Commander Edwin wired at 12.2 G this afternoon: —"Indications of frost tonight, and glass rise during next 1G hours ; then fall, and wind from northward." Constable Hannan, of Stafford, after many years' service in the police force of Otago and Westland, and for a considerable time clerk of Courts, &c, at Stafford, has lately been promoted to the rank of third-class sergeant. Tenders tiro invited by tho Westland County Council for carting and breaking metal —(1), between the Hokitika borough boundary and Flowery Creek, and (2), at Kanieri. Specifications of the two tenders can be seen at the County Council Chambers, Hokitika ; and, in a few days, at Mr Quinn's, Arahura, and Mr Spence's, Rimu. Tenders close on Tuesday, Bth September.

The fire-bell rang on Thursday night, but the cause was the firing of a chimney at the upper end of Seddon street. The Fire Brigade turned out promptly, but fortunately their services were not required. A tragedy is reported by telegraph to have occurred at Hope, near Nelson, yesterday morning, when Robert Tovey, a butcher, was found in the slaughter-house, with his throat cut. An inquest was held, and, after a long discussion, the jury returned a verdict " That Robert Tovey accidentally fell on a knife which he held in his hands, while dividing a carcase of meat, and that in the fall he accidentally cut his throat." News has been received from Sourabaya, in Java, of a volcanic eruption that has taken place in that country, resulting, it is feared, in great loss of life and destruction of property. Simeoroe, which is the principal volcano of East Java, had been showing signs of unusual activity, and early in May a terrible outburst of ashes and lava took place from the crater, which destroyed everything for miles around. It is estimated that 500 natives perished, as well as the manager of an estate and his two assistants. Volcanic rumblings have been heard from Krakatoa Island, off the west coast of Java, accompanied by electric phenomena in the vicinity of the old crater, which nearly two years ago caused so much destruction. It was feared that another eruption was not far distant.

The Wellington supporters of Hearn, the champion sculler of New Zealand, place so much confidence in the ability of their man that they have forwarded a cablegram to Sydney challenging anyone in Australia, except Beach, to row him for £2OO a-side. The message stipulates that any match that may be arranged must come off in New Zealand within three months.

It is understood that O'Loughlin is willing to accept Hunt's challenge to run, provided the latter comes to Greymouth and runs the match off on the Greymouth racecourse. The parties have been in communication over the matter, but no decision has yet been arrived at. The draughts match between Smart and M'Auley, for £lO a-side, was played on Thursday evening at Jones's Empire Hotel, Greymouth ; but it was a very hollow affair, Smart winning three games consecutively. The fourth was a draw. It is understood that there is every probability of another match between the two.

Goon Resolutions.—At the commencement of every new year hundreds and thousands of our young men—and old as well —form resolutions for their guidance for the coining year. Many keep them, while others break them. To such we wish to give a word of advice. In order to sustain your determination of leading a better life in future you should use Hop Bitters. The judicious use of'Hop Bitters strengthens, cleanses, and purifies the stomach, bowels, blood, liver, nerves, and kidneys, and is just what you want to build up and invigorate yourself.—Greenbush, U.S.A., Dem. Read.

The Tidy Housewife.—The careful, tidy housewife, when giving her house its spring cleaning, should bear in mind that the dear inmates are more precious than houses, their systems need cleansing by purifying the blood, regulating the stomach and bowels, and she should know that there is nothing that will do it so surely as American Co.'s Hop Bitters, the purest and best of all medicines.
