PROVINCIAL NEWS.
[united tress association.] Napiek, August 11. There is news to hand of a fatal boat accident at Lake Taupo. Mr Ashman, of the Public Works Department, and Mr Kingsford, of the Telegraph Department, went out on the Lake for a sail on Sunday and were capsized. Both succeeded in gaining the bottom of the boat, which commenced to roll over and over, throwing the men into the water. Ashman became numbed with cold and sunk after two hours, while Kingsford still managed to retain his hold and drifted ashore. When found, he was more dead than alive, and now lies in a very precarious condition. Ashman was universally respected. He was for many years Inspector of roads in the Taupo district. About 12 months ago he paid a visit to England, and returned to the colony some three months ago and re-entered the Government service. He was under 30 years of age, and was the nephew of E. H. Bold, Inspector of Telegraphs in the East Coast district. Timaku, August 10. A girl named Julia Connor, who had been missing from Pareora since Friday night, and for whom search was made on Saturday and Sunday, was discovered in Peeress town this morning. She was arrested this morning on a chai'ge of supposed lunacy.
