* [united PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, August 6. At the R.M. Court to-day, James Christie was charged witli stealing a sealskin vest valued at £6 ; the pro-

perty of George Tucker; and Mary Tucker was charged with stealing £IOO, the property of her Husband, George Tucker, hotel-keeper, Lumsden, The accused were arrested on a telegram from Invercargill. It is asserted that Christie induced Mrs Tucker to elope with him. They have lived in Wellington for a week past under the names of Mr and Mrs Christie. The prisoners were remanded to Riverton. Three Chinamen were charged with smuggling cigars from the Tamsui, and were fined £5, £3, and £1 10s respectively. The Gazette notifies the appointment of Colonel Sir G. S. Whitmore as Inspector of the Yolunteer forces.
