The House of Commons has had under consideration for some time past the question of the better protection of young girls, and a measure for the purpose was the subject of a protracted debate on Friday night. Eventually the age up to which girls are protected was raised to sixteen years. The New Zealand Shipping Company's R.M.S. Tongariro left Plymouth yesterday afternoon for Port Chalmers, calling at Teneriffe and the Cape en route. (Received August 4, 1 a.m.) August 3. The Right Lie v. Dr. Walshe was today consecrated Archbishop of Dublin by his Eminence Cardinal Moran. (Received August 4, 1.30 p.m.) Latest. The Government is in receipt of a telegram from Brigadier-General Greenfield, commanding the Egyptian army, announcing that a rumor is current among the Arabs to the effect that Osman Digna is dead. The cholera continues to spread with unabated vigour, and the daily mortality is very great throughout the country. Ottawa, xlugust 2. The trial of the insurgent Louis Riel was concluded yesterday. The jury found the prisoner guilty, but recommended him to mercy on account of his weak state of mind. (Received August 4, 1 a.m.) Later. Louis Riel was to-day brought up for sentence. He was condemned to be hanged. (Received August 4, 1.30 p.m.) St. Petersburg, August 3. M. De Gicvs, Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs, has been granted two months' leave of absence, and will pay a visit to Bohemia,
